Shipping from Spain to the UK

UK to Spain removals, door to door

Shipping household goods back to the UK runs on the same vehicles that deliver to Spain — which is the single most useful thing to know about it, because those vans have to come home either way. Return-trip space is discounted, so a Spain-to-UK shipment is often 20–40% cheaper than the same load going the other direction.

Typical transit is 2–7 days door to door.

Backloads: why coming home costs less

Every van that takes a British household to the Costa del Sol drives back. A remover would far rather fill that returning vehicle at a discount than run it empty, and that discounted space is a backload.

The trade is flexibility. Backload dates follow the outbound schedule, so if you can give a collection window rather than a fixed day, you get the saving. If you need a specific date, you’re paying for a dedicated run — still available, just priced normally.

Almost nobody publishes this, which is why people assume the return trip costs the same. It usually doesn’t.

What it costs

Reverse pricing varies more than outbound because it depends on van availability in your region on the dates you want. As a working guide:

LoadTypical cost
Part load 5m³from ~£1,000 (less on backload dates)
Part load 10m³~£1,250–£1,400 (less on backload dates)
Three-bed household£3,500–£6,500
Dedicated vehicle£2,300–£3,300

Flexible dates are worth more than negotiating. Full cost guide →

What we ship back

Mostly the contents of homes being closed up: furniture, white goods, personal effects and boxes. Also common — and worth flagging when you book:

  • Part loads and single rooms — the classic backload cargo, since they fit around whatever else is on the van
  • Boxes and personal effects without furniture, where a box service may be cheaper
  • Items bought in Spain — furniture, ceramics, art. These are ordinary goods rather than personal effects you’ve owned and used, so they’re treated differently at customs

Customs — the part that actually matters

Since Brexit, goods entering the UK need a customs entry. Your remover files it; the relief is your responsibility.

If you’re moving your home back to the UK, HMRC’s Transfer of Residence (ToR1) relief exempts your personal belongings from import duty and VAT. You apply online before the goods travel and give the reference to your remover.

Two things to get right:

  1. Apply early. Goods arriving without a reference to clear against can be held, and storage charges start.
  2. Write a proper inventory. Room by room, box by box, contents described. “Assorted household goods” isn’t enough.

If you’re not transferring your residence — emptying a holiday home, say — the relief doesn’t apply and the goods are treated as ordinary imports. Ask before you book so there are no surprises.

Where we collect

Across mainland Spain: the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca, Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Murcia, Almería and inland. The busiest routes are covered on the Spain to UK removals page →. Island collections are quoted on request.

Shipping vs a removal — which do you need?

They’re the same vehicles; the difference is service level. A removal includes wrapping, loading and delivery into rooms. Shipping in the freight sense — pallets, unaccompanied boxes, goods you’ve packed yourself — is cheaper but you do the packing and the risk sits differently.

For a household move, take the removal. For business stock or palletised goods, shipping is the right frame.

Frequently asked questions

How much is shipping from Spain to the UK? Part loads from around £1,000 for 5m³ and £1,250–£1,400 for 10m³, with backload dates below that. A three-bed household runs £3,500–£6,500 (2026 guide prices).

Is it cheaper than shipping to Spain? Usually, yes. Vans return to the UK anyway, so return-trip space is discounted — often 20–40% — if your dates are flexible.

How long does it take? Typically 2–7 days door to door, depending on whether you’re on a dedicated run or a scheduled backload.

Do I pay duty and VAT on my belongings? Not if ToR1 relief applies and you’ve applied before the goods travel. Emptying a second home doesn’t qualify.

What inventory do I need? An itemised list — room by room and box by box, with contents described. Do it as you pack, not afterwards from memory.

Can you collect from the islands? Island collections are quoted on request; they add a ferry leg and a surcharge.

Can I ship things I bought in Spain? Yes, but goods you haven’t owned and used aren’t personal effects for relief purposes and are treated differently. Tell us in advance.
